Exclusive Interview: Tamara Starks for Treasure Chest Beauty Studio

On Thursday morning, I had the opportunity to attend the ribbon cutting for Treasure Chest Beauty Studio in Arlington, TX. The event was great and I even got a tour of the salon from the owner and founder of Treasure Chest Beauty Studio, Tamara Starks. Tamara is an alumna of The University of Texas at Arlington (Go Mavs!) and is a strong minded, hardworking business woman. Check out my interview with her to find out about the start of her business, current specials and an exclusive announcement!

“I believe women are different treasures, a part of a big treasure chest.”

This was her inspiration for the name of her current beauty empire. Treasure Chest Beauty Studio actually began as Treasure Chest Virgin Hair, which many women may be familiar with. Tamara began the Treasure Chest business as a storefront in 2006 selling accessories, handbags and lingerie. In 2009 she decided to add hair extensions to this list which escalated her business. Due to this steady increase, Treasure Chest Virgin Hair was created in 2012.  The vision for Treasure Chest Beauty Studio came about in 2014 when Tamara noticed that women would purchase the hair extensions from her, but a lot of them would not know of a place to get their hair done. Today, Treasure Chest Beauty Studio is a full blown salon that offers hair and makeup services, eyelash extensions, waxing and nail services. Other features include free WiFi. charging stations, a coffee/tea bar and a VIP room for the ultimate treatment. What more could you ask for, ladies?!

What makes Treasure Chest Virgin Hair different from other extension lines is that they constantly have hair in stock. Hair can either be purchased in-store or on the website. Tamara says, “Whenever you hear [Treasure Chest Virgin Hair] you know you’re going to get quality hair every time.”  There are 12 types of hair extensions, including their 10A grade mink hair collection, that are available for purchase so I’m sure there will be something that catches your eye! Tamara’s advice to someone that may be reluctant to trying hair extensions is, “Try it! It’s the best thing you’ve never had,” which I cannot agree with her more! She also weighed in on the wig vs. sew-in debate saying that the durability and variation of wigs is the reason why they are her go-to option.

I asked Tamara what some of her favorite hair products were and the first one she mentioned was Hick’s Edge Control. Even though these jars cost about $15 a pop, she says it is definitely worth it! She said the trick to making it last is to keep the top on the inside of the jar. This keeps the product from drying out too quickly. For conditioners, she mentioned the Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1 Miracle Worker, Silicon Mix, mentioned in my hair restoration tutorial, and Design Essentials Express Instant Moisturizing Conditioner.

Tamara’s advice to someone that is interested in going into the beauty industry is to make sure you do your research. Each business has their ups and downs and Tamara has been in the game long enough to know what works and what doesn’t. She says, “It’s really all about making a solid plan and working through it.” So if you are wanting to start your own business, go for it! You’ll never know how for you can go unless you try.
