Shade Variations for Women of Color

If you are a woman of color, you know how difficult it can be to find your foundation shade from some of the most popular cosmetic brands. With more and more women of color entering the beauty industry on a daily basis, the need for a wider range of shades is huge. Well, women of color are fed up with the lack of variety from some cosmetic brands.

If you are heavy on social media, you know exactly what I mean. It seems as if women of color are being overlooked by cosmetic companies when it comes to what we need. Do we not matter? Better yet, do you not want our money?! This issue makes it hard for women of color to find their shades in higher end brands, so we tend to turn more towards drugstore brands for foundation. Well ladies, I’m not saying this battle is over, but it may be getting a bit easier.

Listen up cosmetic brands: It’s time to stop focusing so much on sending content creators on these immaculate trips and spend a bit more time working on your products.

Now don’t get me wrong, some of these brands are in the process of creating more product. Brands like Urban Decay, Kat Von D and Tarte are listening to us. Late March, Urban Decay announced that they have been working on darker shades of foundation and concealer to add to their Urban Decay Naked Skin collection. With this announcement, I’m sure this may have raised some eyebrows with other cosmetic companies because Tarte later tweeted that they too will be adding deeper shades to their line.

If you want other companies to do the same, tell them! Social media is such a wonderful thing and it can be used in many ways. Leave comments on their posts telling them to create more shades for deeper skin tones! If it is high in demand, they will listen.

Companies will not create products if they feel they will not be useful. Tell them what you need!

Hopefully, the other high end brands will start to follow suit. In the mean time, there are lots of other brands with more than enough shades created for women of color to purchase from like Black Opal, Black Radiance, AJ Crimson, Black Up, Iman Cosmetics and more!

  1. Love this! Being a deeper toned woman, I have had my fair share of struggles when it comes to finding shades that match my tone. It is refreshing to see companies paying attention to the rainbow of colors people come in because walking around with your face and neck being two different colors is no bueno lol
