Skincare is SUPER important, especially when it comes to makeup application. In a sense, your skin is the foundation for your foundation. Get it? The steps for a basic skincare routine are easy to follow. The longer you follow your routine, the better your results will be. The hard part is keeping up with it. You have to follow your routine every day and night. Yes, even when you’re tired from a night out. This is actually when you should really make sure to clean your face properly. And no, just using a makeup remover wipe is NOT enough. The effects of not taking care of your skin can range from acne to early aging, which no one wants to experience. There are three basic steps for skincare: cleanse, tone and moisturize. An extra fourth step, is exfoliation.
Step 1: Cleanse
This is probably the most important step. Depending on what your skin type is, you want to make sure you cleanse your face with a good facial wash. If you don’t have sensitive skin, I am jealous of you because you don’t have to worry about using products that are “gentle” for the skin. A great starter facial wash in my opinion would be either Cetaphil or a Neutrogena product. They’re not the cheapest, but not crazy expensive either.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Exfoliation is important especially if you have dry skin, like myself. Exfoliation helps to remove the dead skin from your face and reveal the fresh and smooth skin underneath. It’s basically like giving your face a good buff since you are deep cleaning your skin and really cleaning out your pores. I would recommend exfoliating every other day for the best results. You can use any type of facial scrub or a brush like a Clarisonic or Spin for Perfect Skin. I think they have those brush heads that are specifically for exfoliation.
Step 3: Tone
This is a step that many people may not do because they don’t know that it’s necessary. Not only does toner help to boost your skin’s radiance and even your skin tone, it also helps to get that last bit of makeup or dirt that you missed when you washed your face. Toner is also good to use for a mid day boost for the skin. Like if you feel that your skin may look a bit dull, you can use toner for an instant glow and refreshed look.
Step 4: Moisturize
Last step! Moisturizers are used to lock in all of the work that you just did on your face. It keeps the skin from getting dry and patchy and boosts your natural glow. Moisturizers are also what helps your skin feel as “soft as a baby’s bottom.” It’s kinda like the cherry on top when it comes to skincare.
So, those are the basic steps of skincare! Of course once you get this normal routine down you can add in your facial masks and other beauty treatments when needed. If you have any questions about these steps or even products let me know!
