10 Uses for Coconut Oil

Everyone loves coconut oil! Most people use it for the hair, but there are many things you can use coconut oil for, believe it or not. For starters, you have to buy the right kind. You have to make sure the coconut oil is virgin and in it’s solid form. This means that it is unrefined and has no extra preservatives in it to maintain a liquid form. True coconut oil should be solid, but melt when it comes in contact with heat. The more natural and organic your oil is, the better your results will be. Let’s get started!

Pre-poo treatment

The night before I wash my hair, I apply coconut oil to enhance moisture. It also keeps my hair super soft and gives it a natural shine. This also helps to minimize tangling which makes my detangling process super fast and easy to get through. Major key: Make sure your hair is sectioned for this process. Sections just make natural hair easier to deal with in general.

Makeup remover

If you’ve had your makeup on for a while and find that makeup remover wipes just aren’t doing the trick, you can rub a little bit of coconut oil onto your face to loosen up your makeup. It will then come off in a breeze! Just make sure you wash your face afterwards. Just removing your makeup is not enough, I cannot stress that enough.

Clean makeup brushes

Same thing goes for makeup brushes. If it’s been a minute since you’ve cleaned your brushes, more than likely the makeup will be hard to get out. Just add a SMALL amount of coconut oil to the brush and rub it in before washing with soap and the makeup will come right off. Typically, you should be cleaning your brushes at least once a week if you use them for personal use. If you’re a makeup artist then you know to clean the between every application.

Body moisturizer

Every night after my shower I apply coconut oil all over my body. It’s basically a natural moisturizer. The key is not to apply too much to where you look like a grease monkey, that’t not the point. After a while, you’ll notice that your skin will feel smoother and have an enhanced natural glow. It can also help to diminish the appearance of stretch marks over time.

Base for body and lip scrubs

If you’re into DIY projects, then this is perfect for you. Coconut oil can be used for the base of all of your body and lip scrubs. Just use your coconut oil, salt or sugar (sugar is more practical) and as an option, your favorite essential oil for a nice scent. This will come in handy during the cooler months. Thank me later!

Shaving agent

Instead of using shaving cream or gel, just use coconut oil! You would start the process the same by making sure the shaving area is wet first then applying the coconut oil and you’re good to go! It is also less messy than shaving cream.

Sounds weird I know, but some people have really sensitive skin so deodorants that are heavily scented may not be the best alternative for them. If you are one of those people, then coconut oil is the way to go. Of course, you’d smell like a coconut all day though so be prepared for that.

Skin irritation relief

If you burn yourself with your curling iron or something, coconut oil can act as a natural irritant relief. Just apply a little bit of coconut oil to the burn for an instant relief in pain. For the burn to totally heal you can apply as much as you need per day. Not only can it be used for burns, but it can also be used for irritated skin due to eczema. Just apply to affected areas 1-2 times a day. Results will vary.

Yeast infection relief

This one may seem odd, but trust me it works. All you need is a tampon and coconut oil. You just remove the tampon from its packaging. Let the tampon soak in melted coconut oil for a few minutes and then insert the tampon as usual. This treatment is better done at night of course and may have to be done 1-3 times to see results, same as if you were to use Monistat or another treatment.

Oil pulling

If you’ve never heard of oil pulling. . .This process basically helps to remove toxins from your body which may be leaving you with yellow looking teeth or even stinky breath. Okay so all you need is a spoon and coconut oil. You can take a spoonful of solid coconut oil or a little less if don’t think you can stomach it. The oil will melt while in your mouth so you don’t have to worry about melting it before. You literally just swish it around your mouth for 15-20 minutes. I normally just do it while I’m getting ready for bed at night so I’m preoccupied. After you spit out the oil, make sure to brush your teeth. Even after once use you can feel the difference while brushing. You can repeat this every other day or everyday if you’d like. It may take about a week to start seeing results.

So yes! There are plenty of uses for coconut oil that you probably never even thought of! Do you have any other uses in mind? I’d love to hear from you!

Stay pretty!
