My first official blog post went live on September 1, 2015. I was in my last semester of college and was just doing this as a creative outlet and to help people with their beauty needs. I was using WordPress, the free version, used my phone to take pictures and I barely knew what I was doing. But, throughout all of this I still kept at it. What kept me going was my passion.
I’m a creative at heart. I’ve always been into arts and crafts, music, dance and writing so blogging is like second nature to me. As far as beauty goes, this was something fairly new to me. Of course I wore makeup and had a skincare “routine” but it wasn’t anything worth talking about. Believe it or not, I wasn’t always this into makeup and beauty. Of course, since I danced throughout middle and high school I had to wear makeup, but that was performance makeup so it was different. I didn’t seriously get into makeup until college.
By my senior year I loved everything makeup and beauty related. I watched YouTube more than television and gagged over products and looks on social media. My mentor in college made me realize what my true passion was; beauty. Changing my major from biology to marketing was the smartest decision of my college career. It allowed me to be more open to different career choices in the beauty industry rather than looking forward to medical school, which I really wasn’t looking forward to.
My love for beauty was apparent during my senior year. I started to experiment with more makeup products and went natural which I wore a lot of protective styles so I was always trying new things with it. My peers would come to me for beauty advice and I would literally light up every time. This is what really gave me that push to begin a blog. I figured if I can help the people that around me, then I want to lend my voice to everyone!
Blogging has opened many doors for me and has scored me opportunities that I could’ve only dreamed of. My first big break was being asked to attend an event with an opportunity to interview Angela Simmons. Yes, my literal baby of a blog (barely running for a month) scored me this opportunity. They saw something in my work and reached out to me. Like, what?! When I got the email, I had to verify lol I was not playing games.
My blog audience continued to grow and I began to network with more local beauty businesses and other bloggers as well. I took a long break from blogging after I graduated. Not because I wasn’t feeling it anymore, but because it was time for a change. Then came this new website with my own domain and everything! I gave my blog a TOTAL makeover, including changing the name from Beauty Unscripted to my own name, Kierstin Elisabeth. I decided to make myself a brand.
Since rebranding and starting my YouTube channel in April, I have had so many amazing opportunities. I’ve worked with brands like Rocksbox, Essence Beauty Box, Macy’s Backstage, Patchology and CURLS! I am also now a brand ambassador for CURLS which I am very excited about!! I also have some things in the works with some other brands so be on the look out for that!
If I wouldn’t talk about things like this, people would think that I’m just sitting around doing nothing, which is far from the truth. I normally don’t talk about my opportunities with brands because I don’t like to sound braggy, but I’ve realized that it’s not being braggy. I am very proud of myself and everything that I’ve accomplished so far in just one year. I deserve to be able to talk about those things without people thinking that I’m bragging.
My point is, if I could accomplish this in just a year, then the sky is the limit! If you are thinking about blogging, then do it now! Don’t wait. Don’t have equipment? So what! I just got a camera earlier this year and I JUST got lighting about 2 weeks ago. You can make it work if you really put in effort. What matters is your quality of content. You can have the most expensive equipment, but if your content is trash then what’s the point?
If you’ve read this far, thank you for following and supporting me along this journey. I am so appreciative for every single one of you, I don’t think I can say it enough. It’s because of you that I’m able to continue doing what I love. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me and I hope you’ll stick around to find out!
